Vinalhaven Wedding

Lydia and Ben’s Island Wedding

A September wedding on Vinalhaven - one of Maine’s most beautiful islands. Lydia’s family has lived here for generations and Ben has joined Lydia in making this spruce-dotted granite rise in the Penobscot Bay a mainstay in their lives. In their initial message to us they noted that there’s so much they wished to celebrate – their daughter’s birth, the wedding, and the uniting of people from far and wide after recent years apart.

We began the Vinalhaven wedding day by piling aboard the "Captain Richard G. Spear", very proud to have a state run ferry service that provides wonderful, reliable transportation. We bumped into the couple’s wedding coordinator and hair stylist on board – the ferry is really the most convenient way to reach the island!

Once ashore on Vinalhaven, a brief car ride brought us to the open fields and the lovely Cape-style private home known as Sea Pastures. We greeted the couple and started taking pictures of the preparations underway. In the hours leading up to the wedding, Lydia and Ben did an incredible job of welcoming friends, fielding questions, and remaining gracefully present to each other’s needs and desires in the moment.

After the couple shared an impromptu first look on the porch, the wedding was set to take place in a beautiful field full of late season grasses just south of the house. Lydia’s brother walked with her towards the chuppah overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The couple’s two officiants called upon all the children in attendance to raise their voices and cheer as a method of emphasizing certain points in the ceremony – a ceremony that truly incorporated a breadth of meaningful traditions. It was an honor to witness!

We were grateful to enjoy a gorgeous golden glow for backlighting portraits. We also appreciated the receiving line – informal but intentional. Guests dined under a sailcloth tent, made loving toasts, and danced the hora. This Vinalhaven wedding was also accompanied by a magnificent moonrise. We can’t say enough about the couple’s generosity and belief in the power of uniting people. The moon shone on…

Congratulations, Lydia and Ben!
