What's your approach to photographing weddings?
I spontaneously respond to what I see with my heart and mind. I like to balance expansive, romantic images with intimate journalistic moments. I am always looking for the emotions generated by the events of a wedding day. I connect with people. I also like to photograph the architecture, details, and patterns of whatever you've chosen to surround your wedding day.
Weddings often progress quickly though, and I'm aware of staying one step ahead in order to capture important moments as they evolve. Good planning is also helpful here.
When it comes to shooting formal portraits, I think it's important to give more direction. I will cheerfully orchestrate the group posing that translates into the photographs that you want. The goal is always to make this as fast, easy, and fun as possible so that everyone can soon return to the celebration.
For the wedding couple I like to have time to be able to wander off a bit and photograph just the two of you. These photographs are usually some of the most beautiful and treasured of all.
Where are you based and do you travel? Are there travel fees?
I'm based in Spruce Head, Maine, a small fishing village south of Rockland. I photograph throughout Maine and travel to parts of New England. I charge modest travel fees outside Maine.
When will we get our photos?
You will receive an online gallery link with all your photos within 3 weeks. The gallery will be posted for three months. You can easily download all the photos from the gallery. You can also share them, choose your favorites, and order prints! Pretty cool.
How many pictures will we receive?
You will receive between 500 to 600 carefully edited images for eight hours of coverage with a single photographer. The addition of a second photographer not only increases the number of images received, but more importantly allows for simultaneous coverage of your event from alternate angles.
What if I am having a small family wedding of less than sixty people? Do you have an option for me?
I'd be happy to discuss your particular situation.
Do you work with a second photographer?
Yes. Two of my packages include a second photographer. There are considerable advantages to having a second photographer present for your wedding. These include increasing the number of carefully edited, time synced photographs and simultaneous shots of important wedding moments from different angles. Among these are wedding preparation shots, first look perspectives, wedding vows, and exchange of rings. A second photographer can provide complete coverage of the cocktail hour or reception while the family and wedding party formals are taken by the other photographer. I would certainly recommend a second BrightWorks photographer for larger weddings or for any wedding where the couple is preparing in separate locations.
What if the wind blows my hair out of place or I have a nervous rash the day of the wedding?
These things happen, believe me! Although weather is always a variable to contend with, I do strive to shoot in the most flattering light and under the best conditions, but when unable I simply make adjustments. Also, unlike film cameras, digital cameras can produce images that are extremely detailed, so it's important to be sensitive during the first round of edits. Later, I provide a second look at the images you "favorite," so at that time you can let me know of any concerns. Corrective editing can fix most issues. Remember though, Meghan Markle once told her royal wedding photographers that she wanted images that preserved her freckles!
What do we need to think about before we meet with you for our engagement session?
Not to worry! I will email you a complete list of suggestions you might want to consider before we meet. It will discuss everything from having your ring cleaned to thoughts about what to wear. Even couples who are nervous about posing before the camera end up finding our sessions easy and fun. Your engagement session is actually an important part of your wedding photography experience because it allows us to really get to know one another and for you to become familiar with the way we work. This will help to create a ton of gorgeous, natural looking portraits of you both on your wedding day.
Can we Skype or meet for coffee before we decide to book BrightWorks for our wedding?
Absolutely! Let's go out for coffee if you're up this way or we can meet in Portland. It's so important to figure out a good match for your wedding photography services.
How do we reserve you as our wedding photographer?
Well that's an easy one! After we've determined our availability for your wedding date, and all your initial questions have been answered, I will agree to hold your date and time for one week. You will have this time to review the contract which I email to you. I will also ask for a 25% non-refundable deposit with the signed contract. Once received I will reserve the time and date agreed. For this reason, the reservation deposit is non-refundable.
If your date is changed before six months prior to the agreed date and time, the deposit is transferable if we can find a mutually agreeable time and date. The balance is due two weeks before the wedding. These and other details are spelled out in the contract which you will have time to review during that first week.
